May 29 2014 garden update
Late to the blog with the updates...it has been a busy spring.
Back yard:
April 23: planted boxes with flowers, sunflowers, and spinach. Many of the seeds were a few years old but they go on to sprout.
May 3: went to Granny's Garden School Plant Sale, bought Stupice and Roma tomatoes, Jimmy Nardellos, red bell peppers, and basil. Planted out a day later.
Notes:
Chickens have gone to a farm. Neighbor complained.
All fruit trees affected by late cold weather. Apples coming in on Granny Smith, Macintosh unhappy. Peach lost blooms, no fruit this year but it's a year in so that's ok. Cherries had few blooms, no idea what they are doing. Still have aphids and ant farmers.
Had Siberian Iris bloom beautifully due to all the rain. Indigo trying to take over. Buddleia died in polar vortex. So did Lavender and Rosemary. RIP.
Raised beds:
Salad greens; green peas; sugar snaps (in late in early May); carrots
Broccoli and Kale, also Italian Parsley from Burger's
Blackberry is down to two old canes and a new one coming up.
Pond:
Transplanted yellow flag and it's blooming.
Cattails are blooming for the first time.
Algae a problem.
All fish survived the winter; added three new Koi from Jones.
Had two Leopard frogs for a month but they moved on.
Front yard:
Mock orange blooming.
Added annuals for the first time.
Moved sedum under mock orange and they are thriving.
Added three new hollyhocks, annuals by front door.
Geraniums in pots.
Lucy's blueberries in pots.
We have a new friendly toad.
Side yard:
Hops are going crazy, one is over the garage roof.
Pulled out lots of bear's breeches for room for grapes.
Actually mowed the path.
Fence going in mid-June. Yay.
